5 Reasons to Stop Supporting Trump Now
Don't worry: Pulling your support from Trump doesn't make you a Democrat.

If you’re reading this, there’s a good chance you don’t support Trump. On the outside chance you are a Trump supporter, here are five reasons why now is a good time to stop supporting him.
1) Tariffs are raising prices.
Economists have a saying: “No one wins a trade war.” We just picked a fight with our allies and our top trading partners, a fight no one can win. With the heftiest tariffs levied at China, the prices of everything from electronics to clothing to machine parts are poised to spike, affecting American consumers and businesses alike, which some economists are saying could catapult us into a recession. Hedge fund billionaire, Ray Dalio, thinks it might be even worse. Maybe you could make the case for a more aggressive economic posture toward China (maybe), but the tariffs also targeted long-time allies like Canada, a country that provides us with more energy than any other country. The cost of alienating our allies outstrips any gains to be made from a trade war. Though not directly related to tariffs, I’d be remiss if I didn’t point out that eggs reached a record-high $6.23 per dozen last month, just in time for Easter.
2) Trump is creating a new swamp.
Trump vowed to “drain the swamp,” that is, end corruption in D.C., when he first campaigned for president. Instead, he’s replaced it with a new swamp. Marjorie Taylor Greene, head MAGA cheerleader, bought anywhere from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars’ worth of the most affected stocks on the day before and the day of Trump pausing tariffs. The market rallied immediately. Does this amount to market manipulation and insider training? The timing is suspicious, to say the least. What about DOGE? The efficiency department isn’t efficient at all, firing government employees en masse and then rehiring when they realized they’d made mistakes. Instead of trimming fat, they’re cutting bone. Even so, they’re still well short of their $1 trillion target. DOGE claims to have saved the U.S. $115 billion, a figure analysts say is inflated by at least 80%. DOGE has made so many accounting errors that they started deleting their biggest claims. DOGE is a dog-and-pony show designed to convince us they’re working for the middle class while distracting us from what this administration is really doing: Further enriching the rich. Replacing government bureaucracy with billionaire patronage isn’t draining the swamp. It’s just replacing one swamp with another.
3) Trump wants to deport U.S. citizens.
Maybe you’re happy with his hardline stance on immigration, but I’d be surprised if you supported the deportation of U.S. citizens. That’s exactly what he said during his meeting with Nayib Bukele, president of El Salvador, at the White House yesterday. You don’t have to believe me. You can watch him say it here. First of all, he’s talking about U.S. CITIZENS. Second of all, this administration makes too many mistakes and has shown a willingness to ignore court orders to be trusted with only deporting the “really bad ones.” This administration wrongfully deported Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who was in the United States legally, because of an “administrative error.” Even the conservative-heavy Supreme Court has called for the administration to facilitate Garcia’s release. Garcia is hardly the first, and he won’t be the last. This administration is disappearing innocent people, and now Trump is floating the idea of doing the same with U.S. citizens.
4) Trump is not conservative.
This one’s evergreen, but it bears repeating: Trump is no Republican. Up until 2011, he donated more money to the Democrats, including the Clinton Foundation, than the Republicans. Does that make him a Democrat? No, it makes him an opportunist. As a commercial real estate developer in New York, it behooved Trump to play nice with New York politicians. They tend to be Democrats. He upped his donations to Republicans when he started to seriously consider running for president. Even then, he wasn’t committed to the Republican party, suggesting he might run as an independent or a third party if he didn’t secure the Republican nomination in 2015. Still, maybe it’s not about the Republican party. Maybe you support him for his conservative values. Well, he’s doesn’t have any. Family values? He has five children with three wives, and his current wife, the First Lady, worked in the U.S. illegally—an offense that today could get you sent to a Salvadoran prison. And regardless of what you think of Stormy Daniels, can we at least agree that it’s not far-fetched that the guy who bought the Miss America pageant, partied with Jeffrey Epstein (if I can admit it’s a bad look for Clinton, you can admit it’s a bad look for Trump), and married a model who posed in the nude also had sex with a porn star? I don’t particularly care about Trump’s trysts and affairs, but if you support traditional family values, then you should. Also, he’s no Christian. He can’t even quote a single bible verse.
5) It doesn’t make you a Democrat.
Pulling your support from Trump doesn’t make you a Democrat. You don’t have to start wearing pussy hats. You don’t have to go vegan. You can maintain your conservative values, however you define that. Instead, support a Republican who isn’t trying to be king.
