Dear Latino MAGAs,
Trump doesn’t want you here. Neither do Republicans. Neither do their constituents. They’re not even trying to hide it. You’re just too hardheaded to look.
Trump promised mass deportation. When he delivered, those of you whose family and friends got caught in the dragnet cried about it.
“Oh, I didn’t think he meant me. I thought he meant them, you know, the criminals.”
Newsflash: To them, you are the criminal. And if you aren’t yet, they make you the criminal. Because they really don’t care if you are or you aren’t. It’s not about that.
If you’re an asylum seeker with temporary protected status, they’ll simply remove your protections at their leisure.
If you’re a law-abiding permanent resident, they’ll throw you in detention.
If you’re a naturalized citizen, they’ll revoke your citizenship.
Those aren’t hypotheticals. That’s what this administration is doing right now.
They want you to think that they’re only going after the criminals, that if you come here the “right way” and behave, you’ll be safe. But you’re not safe. There are countless examples of this administration detaining non-criminals, permanent residents, and even citizens. Masked ICE agents with no identification are abducting people in broad daylight, noncitizens and citizens alike, without a whiff of due process.
Why? Because you look like you play for the wrong team. And if you look like you’re on the wrong team, you are on the wrong team.
Don’t be fooled, my fellow “white-passing” Latinos. They don’t want you either. You’re just harder to pick out. Maybe if you don’t open your mouth and anglicize your name, you’ll be safe. For a while.
Now, they’ve constructed a de facto concentration camp in Florida that they’re merrily calling “Alligator Alcatraz.” Why? Well, let’s see what Dear Leader has to say about it. Below I’ll include transcript and video:
Reporter: “And with the Alligator Alcatraz, is the idea that if some illegal immigrant escapes, they just get eaten by an alligator or a snake or something?”
Trump: “I guess that’s the concept. This is not a nice business. I guess that’s the concept. If you, you know, snakes are fast, but alligators are much…we’re going to teach them how to run away from an alligator—OK, how to run away. Don’t run in a straight line. Run like this. You know what? Your chances go up about 1%.”
Designing a facility so that the main deterrent is being eaten alive by alligators is medieval. I don’t care who’s in there. That’s not a what a civilized country does to people.
You’ll find a way to rationalize that, I’m sure. “Oh, he was just joking,” which is the last bastion of someone who can no longer defend what Trump says. Or you’ll say that criminals deserve that kind of treatment. Apart from being barbaric, that claim is easily disproven.
Here is Austin Kocher, an assistant research professor at Syracuse University who analyzes immigration data:
In other words, you could end up in “Alligator Alcatraz” with nothing but an immigration infraction, which is nothing but a civil violation that is not even considered a crime. Additionally, immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than U.S.-born citizens, according to a Northwestern study that pulls from 150 years of data.
Far-right political gadfly, Laura Loomer, joked about alligators eating immigrants. Independent journalist,
, picked up on the number she chose to use in her grotesque humor:There’s no way to sugarcoat it. She’s talking about ethnic cleansing. Genocide. You’ll probably argue that she’s on the political fringe. Well, she has millions of followers, and Trump himself has referenced her. Maybe you’ll argue that she was joking, but you have to ask yourself why she would use that 65 million number for her joke. That’s a specific number. She didn’t say “thousands” or “millions.” She used the latest Census figure for the number of Latinos in the U.S. That was deliberate.
You might be wondering why this administration would persecute law-abiding Hispanic citizens when so many broke for Trump in the 2024 presidential election. Well, since y’all seem to like conspiracy theories so much, here’s one for you:
One of the biggest conspiracy theories on the far-right is the Great Replacement Theory, the notion that “White” Americans are being deliberately and systematically replaced by immigrants and “minorities.” Which group of people do you think represents the biggest threat to an Anglo-Saxon majority? You already know.
Latinos have been the fastest-growing population in the United States for decades. In 1970, when my sister was born, 9.6 million Hispanics made up a mere 5% of the U.S. population. As of 2023, 65 million Hispanics made up one-fifth (19.5%) of the overall population. The most efficient way to prevent the so-called Great Replacement, then, would be to reduce the Latino population in the U.S.
Eugenics and ideology only tell part of the story. We can’t overlook the fact that immigration enforcement is big business. Stephen Miller, one of the chief architects of immigration enforcement under Trump’s administration, has a financial stake in Palantir, a contractor for ICE—a blatant conflict of interest. With billions of dollars to be made, this administration will stop at nothing to plug more “customers” into the pipeline.
When criminals aren’t enough, they snatch up non-criminals. When non-residents aren’t enough, they take residents. When residents aren’t enough, they graduate to citizens. The money-making machine needs to be fed, all while throwing red meat at their xenophobic voter base.
You don’t have to like Democrats—hell, I have my problems with Democrats—but don’t believe for a second that Trump and these Republicans give a shit about you. They don’t. You’re not part of the team. They don’t support you, but they’ll gladly accept your support. They’ll make a special dispensation for you if you provide them with cheap labor. They’ll take your vote and then turn right around and use it to expedite your disenfranchisement and removal. Whether you’re here “legally” or not has very little to do with it.
