I found many different echoes of recognition in this piece. I'm sorry for your loss; the loss of your dad and the chance to reconcile the way you would have wanted to. Throwing a digital arm around your shoulders in comfort. My deepest condolences, Pablo.

This must have been painful to write. We never know what others go through that makes them who they are. Particularly if they do not have the opportunity to process their own wounds. Thank you for sharing this profound experience of your father. Beautiful writing.

It was, but it would’ve been more painful not to write. Sharing it publicly might’ve been the hardest part.

My own Dad hasn't spoken to me -- or, as far as I know, even acknowledged my existence -- in nearly a decade. He turns 97 in a couple of weeks.

He was never violent and, last I saw him, healthy but I nevertheless felt like I was reading the end of our story here.

Thanks for reading and commenting, Virginia. It can be emotionally confusing navigating a relationship with an estranged parent. I hope it's not taxing you too much.
