The right of habeas corpus (and its history as foundational to democracy) needs to be part of the public education dossier on this issue

That post was disappointing (Turner's, not yours!)

I get the neverending struggle of Black Americans for justice and equality. I think of the unfairness and racism in America quite a lot. But fighting for another person doesn't mean giving up your own fight. TBH, if Kilmar is ignored and allowed to perish with no publicity, who does Turner think the administration is going to come after next?

Absolutely. The struggle of Black Americans is acute and ongoing, eminently deserving of support from outside their community, but your point about fighting for another not meaning you have to give up your own fight is the crux of what I was trying to say. Thanks for reading and for the thoughtful comment, Yamuna.

It is so sad how many of us are unable to see ourselves in the struggle of other minorities. It goes both ways, so many Hispanic immigrants refuse to support the cause of African American liberation. We think "ese problema no es mío." And not just in the States, but in our home countries... there is immense classism with strong overtones of racism.

It's like the worst parts of ourselves are always in a race to the "top" without realizing that, as long as people like Trump are at the top, that is pointless because there is no such thing as getting there. After all, we're not white.

Spot on. Hispanics are far from blameless. Colorism and racism are rampant. I understand the impulse to watch out for you and yours, but being so willing to sacrifice others in the process is depressing as all hell.

some of us never got out of that slave, crabs-in-a-pot mentality that was socialized into our ancestors by their masters. some of us just have bad takes every once in a while. and some of us never got out of that slave, crabs-in-a-pot mentality that was instilled in us by a racist-ass system still in existence to this day.

The crabs-in-a-pot thing is so insidious. I appreciate the comment, Leroy.

There are many black Americans. You are highlighting the opinions of one man. I want to see statistics (facts) not just opinion. Where is the evidence that all blacks, many blacks, some blacks, a minority of blacks share his view.

Black Americans have diverse opinions as do other races and religions. I won’t form my opinion on of any one race or subject based on the opinion of one man.

But you are correct. Division is always a tactic in politics.

There are different kinds of articles. This is not a reported article. This is an opinion editorial, a counterargument to the opinion of someone who has a platform with a not-insignificant following. Since I found the opinion, which concerns a topic I’ve been writing about recently, to be harmful, I felt compelled to respond to it. Nowhere in this piece do I suggest that Turner’s opinion is representative of the wider Black community, nor do I attempt to encapsulate a monolithic Black opinion on the matter.

The difference is Newsom has attempted to establish a rapport with right-wing provocateurs. I have not. I’m exposing the myths and misconceptions put forward by one. Some misinformation is too egregious to let slide. For me, this was one of those instances. By the way, I find it disrespectful to suggest I spend my time featuring right-wing pundits and not reaching “directly to the people,” based on one article. You don’t know me, and you clearly have not read much of my writing.

I didn’t suggest that you are furthering right wing pundits views and not reaching out directly to the people as a judgement. I put it as a point that it may be misconstrued. Both Gavin Newsome and Bernie have been criticized for their actions as well.

You are correct. I don’t know you and would not speak to your motives.

I simply said that the battles in politics can be fought different ways. You have your way, others have theirs.

These are not criticisms. I am sorry if I did not convey them clearly.

You are entitled to opine any way you choose.

Please don’t gaslight me. You were criticizing my approach. You’re right that there are multiple ways to “battle in politics,” and this is how I chose to fight on this particular day.

I didn’t say you were advocating one side or another. I just asked for further information in order to gage how the opinions were formed.

You are entitled to your opinion and to use this platform as you like.

I find that those sharing controversial opinions ( the independent conservative leaning writer) often do so in order to get a reaction and go viral. Then their opinion infects other spaces, the more it spreads the more it appears that it has a wider support.

I heard these same sentiments argued when Gavin Newsome and other democrats featured right wing guests in the name of fairness or to attract the other side.

Not sure how effective it is. Bernie goes directly to the people rather than giving the right wing pundits airtime.

There are multiple ways to battle in politics.

Nope, just reacting to the one opinion.
