Seems like we were working on a similar wavelength recently. This piece makes so many great observations and offers people methods within reach to achieve improvements we seek. It and my latest piece seem to complement each other too, if I may be so bold to say so. Great piece.
We don’t lack empathy. When 60 to 70 percent of the population agrees on all major cultural concerns—gun control and climate change as examples—this is FROM personal and systemic empathy. It’s the mechanisms that overshadow the majority’s empathy that tamp down drive born of this innate humane characteristic. Another word for this mechanism is institutional greed. That is what needs overcoming.
I agree that institutional greed is a big part of the problem, but I don’t agree that lack of empathy is not a problem. They’re not mutually exclusive.
Completely agree with you. They are not mutually exclusive. Both can be worked on. But there is a core of empathy we have from which to build, rather than a paucity. That is a strength. It’s a main reason why we counter the abject lack of it among those whose priorities have shifted to power and money first.

I appreciate the kind words. I'll be sure to check out your latest piece too.
You're welcome and if you do get around to giving it a read, I'll appreciate it.
